As Earth Day approaches on April 22nd, sustainability and the protection of our environment are at the forefront of focus for the building trades, and always have been. The building trades have prioritized the health and safety of our communities utilizing exceptional instructors, the most up to date training practices, and quality control that goes above and beyond expectations. All these factors lead to a better, more sustainable outcome within the trade fields since as soon as apprentices enter the workforce, they are on the front line of protecting our natural resources while building the infrastructure of our great state.
One example of this is the Plumbers Local 27 Green System Awareness class with topics including “GREEN” Systems related to Solar Energy, Grey & Rainwater Harvesting Systems, and many energy-saving technologies.
In the field, Insulators Local 2 helps cut down on greenhouse gas emissions and excess energy use through proper thermal and acoustic insulation of piping and mechanical systems. It also improves the health and safety of those working in the area by reducing noise and increasing fire prevention.
These practices reach across all 16 trade unions under the Builders Guild umbrella. For more than 100 years, many of these locals have protected our environment as a natural part of their jobs. During this month of heightened awareness, we’d like to thank them for all they have done and continue to do. Here’s to a healthier, happier, and greener Pennsylvania.
