IMG 6617As June wrapped National Safety Month, the Builders Guild reminds you that safety is first. You and your coworker's safety is the highest priority. If something doesn’t seem right, STOP and report it immediately.

Remember, when you choose one of our 16 Building Trade Unions, you choose safety. The highest quality training and union representatives that fight for proper on the job conditions are some of the benefits to give you and your loved one's peace of mind.

Trade Work is Work You Wont Trade Once You Find Your FitAs May winds down, the Builders Guild reflects on the importance of Mental Health Awareness month and its effects in the building trades. Too often, those in construction and skilled trades do not take advantage of one of the biggest benefits our 16 trade unions have to offer, community support. Mental health is a wide-ranging issue that can feel taboo for many to discuss, especially the independent personality of many construction workers.

The Builders Guild reminds you though, your union brothers and sisters are here for you. If you are struggling, please reach out to your coworkers and union representatives. No matter what your struggle is, your union will have your back through it and be there for the journey to better health. We thank Jimmy Cassidy of Pittsburgh Insulators Local #2 for speaking on behalf of all the building trades about this topic. You can find his videos here

Trade Work is Work You Wont Trade Once You Find Your Fit4As Earth Day approaches on April 22nd, sustainability and the protection of our environment are at the forefront of focus for the building trades, and always have been. The building trades have prioritized the health and safety of our communities utilizing exceptional instructors, the most up to date training practices, and quality control that goes above and beyond expectations. All these factors lead to a better, more sustainable outcome within the trade fields since as soon as apprentices enter the workforce, they are on the front line of protecting our natural resources while building the infrastructure of our great state.

One example of this is the Plumbers Local 27 Green System Awareness class with topics including “GREEN” Systems related to Solar Energy, Grey & Rainwater Harvesting Systems, and many energy-saving technologies.

In the field, Insulators Local 2 helps cut down on greenhouse gas emissions and excess energy use through proper thermal and acoustic insulation of piping and mechanical systems. It also improves the health and safety of those working in the area by reducing noise and increasing fire prevention.

These practices reach across all 16 trade unions under the Builders Guild umbrella. For more than 100 years, many of these locals have protected our environment as a natural part of their jobs. During this month of heightened awareness, we’d like to thank them for all they have done and continue to do. Here’s to a healthier, happier, and greener Pennsylvania.

Trade Work is Work You Wont Trade Once You Find Your FitThis month, the Builders Guild is proud to highlight the work of Eddie Green, Welding Instructor for  Steamfitters Local 449. During the month of February, you may have noticed the Steamfitter's video series showcasing Eddie’s path into the building trades as well as a reflection on the wisdom he has picked up along the way.

Eddie’s Steamfitter journey began with an intro to the trades from his father-in-law, who was a 35+ year journeyman out of Local 5. Much like his father in-law, Eddie is paying it forward by spreading the word about the opportunities available in the building trades.

From a part-time night welding instructor to a full-time integral piece of the 449 Welding program, while also training other apprentices, Eddie has put in countless work beyond his current leadership role.

“After 17 or 18 weeks in the program, the sense of accomplishment in the volume of certifications that the apprentices have received is the most rewarding part of the job,” Green said. “Entering the Steamfitters union is not a good option, but a great option, especially for young people. It allows them to enter a sustainable career without any education debt for them or their family.”
